LS06 The Great Wave off Kanagawa Limited Edition
British vintage-inspired watch brand Loresum presents its new limited-edition art watch series – "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". This series directly captures the most renowned masterpiece by the Japanese Ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai from the Edo period, condensing its majestic and turbulent scene onto the compact canvas of the watch dial. It pays homage to its timeless artistic spirit and its profound impact on global art history.
Honoring a Confluence in Art History: The Eternal Wave from Edo to Impressionism
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is not only a symbol of Japanese culture but also a key vehicle for the "Japonisme" trend that swept Europe in the 19th century. Its dynamic composition, capture of natural force, and unique use of blue (Prussian blue) deeply inspired Western Impressionist masters, including Van Gogh and Monet. Loresum's selection of this work aims to commemorate this history of East-West artistic fusion. The brand's Creative Director stated: "We are not merely recreating a famous painting on the dial; we are permanently engraving a moment that changed the perspective of Western art. This watch is a chapter of art history worn on the wrist, commemorating the spiritual resonance across time and space between Katsushika Hokusai and Monet."
Ukiyo-e (浮世絵)
Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), meaning “pictures of the floating world,” refers to a style of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868). Ukiyo-e artists often depicted landscapes, seasons, everyday life, kabuki actors, and portraits of beauties, capturing fleeting moments of pleasure, travel, and culture. The style is admired for its bold outlines, simplified forms, balanced compositions, and striking colour arrangements—qualities that continue to influence modern visual design today.
Traditionally, ukiyo-e prints were made through a detailed woodblock printing process involving teamwork rather than a single artist. First, the artist created a final ink drawing, which was then transferred onto a wooden block to carve the “key block,” responsible for the main outlines. Additional blocks were carved separately for each colour, sometimes requiring many blocks for one image. A printer would then apply pigments onto each block and press paper onto them one layer at a time, carefully aligning every impression using registration marks. Through this layered hand-printing technique, ukiyo-e achieved its signature crisp linework, flat yet vibrant colour fields, and subtle gradients—effects that are especially evident in the iconic blue tones of The Great Wave.

Ingenious Design: Vintage Style Embodying the Soul of Ukiyo-e
To perfectly harmonize with the classical aura of the artwork, Loresum specially selected an elegantly vintage oval-shaped case with smooth, gentle lines. The dial features a meticulously crafted light golden background, resembling aged classical drawing paper, fully presenting the iconic indigo waves, the snow-white Mount Fuji, and the gradient colors of the sky from "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," with exquisite attention to detail. The case is crafted from light golden stainless steel, offering a subtle and soft luster.
The Micro-Rotor Movement
In the 1970s, the micro-rotor became a symbol of refined luxury, appearing in some of the most prestigious and expensive watch brands of the era. Unlike traditional full rotors, the micro-rotor allows for slimmer cases without sacrificing automatic winding, making it rare and highly sought-after. For the LS06, LORESUM chose a HZ5000a movement—the best option available with a micro-rotor. It is robust, reliable, and beautifully finished, complete with customised heat-blued screws for added refinement. The rarity of modern micro-rotor movements makes this watch stand out, echoing the spirit of 1970s high horology while keeping it accessible today.
